The 39th World Chess Olympiad: What A Wonderful Way to Celebrate Chess!

The Official Opening of the Olympiad took place on Monday, September 20th, 2010, in Khanty-Mansiysk.

This event will take place from September 19 through October 4, 2010.

“The World Chess Olympiad 2010, the largest national teams event in the sports calendar of FIDE, will take place 19th September – 4th October in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia.

More than 150 men and 119 women teams have registered for the Olympiad. A total of 1380 players will compete in the two sections. The statistics show that more than 772 titled players will be present, out of them 247 GMs, 63 WGMs, 160 IMs, 87 WIMs, 81 FMs, and 80 WFMs.

The official start of the competition will be given on Monday at 21:30 local time with a spectacular opening ceremony. All rounds start at 15:00 local time, except the last round which starts at 11:00.”

“In his welcoming speech FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov,  emphasized that Ugra has a very rich experience with holding events and competitions of the highest levels.”

“For two weeks the attention of millions of people will concentrate on Khanty-Mansiysk as it unites all of the world chess elite,” said FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.”

“We have hosted 3 World Chess Cups and other important events.”, noted FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in his message; “It is obvious that Khanty-Mansiysk deserves to host the most prominent chess event on the planet.”

“As was evident from the Opening Ceremony for the Chess Olympiad, the FIDE President’s words lived up to his message with the wonderfully tremendous and spectacular show which may just be the most beautiful in history so far.”

“The 39th World Chess Olympiad will be a record-breaker as far as the number of participants is concerned. It will unite chess players from 160 countries from all around the world, 67 foreign and 66 Russian arbiters as well as 1000 officials and representatives of the Russian and foreign media.”
